The shivering monkey

I dreamt that it was somehow raining inside my house, but everyone and everything was going on as normal. It was mid-afternoon. I was walking in through the bathroom and noticed a small thing in an especially dark corner. The corner itself was another material from the rest of the bathroom, it was damp wood rather than painted cement, but at the moment I didn't really notice or care. All my attention was on this little ball of fur cowering in the middle.

At first I thought it was a small kitten, all wet and alone, so I picked it up to cuddle and warm it, and realized it was actually a baby cappuccino monkey. As I picked it up it clung to my arm, shivering. When I cradled it against my chest it looked up at me, straight into my eyes. Dark eyes they were, on a hard lined face, in dissonance with the frail body, but yet it was open to love and affection, care and warmth.

I hugged it close, resolving to care and protect it.
