The decrepit hotel and the scorpion

I dreamt that I was going to Seattle for work, and my mom, my wife, my and my brother came with me. We stayed at some hotel overlooking a nice mountain. The hotel seemed really nice from the outside, but the more we walked to our rooms the more it became dirty and decrepit. My brother and I stayed in the room at the very end of the corridor, while my mom and my wife stayed in one much closer to the elevator. In the dream I didn't think this arrangement was strange.

As me and my brother entered our room we saw it was full of cobwebs all over the place, some even going from the floor to the ceiling. There were some large slugs as well. One of them, the size of my forearm, caught our attention as it was "sliding" over one of the cobwebs much faster than a slug usually moves. It almost seemed graceful, like a sea creature. It was dripping slime as it went. The cobweb passed on top of a table that had a charcuterie board on top op it (probably as a welcome gift from the hotel), and slime dripped all over it. Interestingly, this didn't seem weird or unexpected to either of us, and at no point did we ever think about complaining with the hotel or anything. This was just "how it was". Though of course, neither of us now wanted to touch that charcuterie board.

The view from the window was breathtaking as it overlooked a valley and a large mountain in the close distance. The air was clear and crisp. It looked a lot like where I went to university. We had plans so that the next day my wife, mom, and brother would go visit the mountain while I went do some work stuff.

While getting settled in the room I noticed there was a small window just above the beds that had no glass and a scorpion was standing there. I felt like it needed to be gone as it could fall on either of us as we slept. I looked around and saw a can of insecticide in the bathroom, it was placed just next to the door and I got the impression the hotel assumed we would want to use it. I felt really bad about it (in waking life I usually never kill bugs if I can help it) and I sprayed the scorpion with it. It didn't really seem to came much and it stood there. I told myself perhaps it hadn't done it's effect yet and I went to get my stuff out of my luggage.

Some interesting points:

  • My wife and mom sleeping in one bedroom while I slept with my brother
  • The hotel itself. Could it represent the cleaning up of the cobwebs of the unconscious? Perhaps I'm thinking me and my brother will go (or have gone) further along this route than my mom and my wife? The descent into decrepitude sure seems to indicate something of the sort.
    • Or maybe it's the other way around, as they've moved to a nicer part while we still reside in the dirtiest.
  • I feel the graceful slime is an important image. Perhaps something about beauty being everywhere.
  • The dichotomy with the free air and the beautiful mountain, with respect to the dirty interior of the room.
  • The poor scorpion I didn't want to kill, and his just standing there unperturbed, observing, after I sprayed it with insecticide.
